Why Travel Alone?

Posted by Cedric A. Solidon On October - 25 - 2010

I first traveled by myself as a 13-year-old teenager. And from then on, I’ve always tried to travel alone whenever I can. It’s a habit that’s never going away, I guess.

Traveling alone can open up a lot of exciting opportunities and possibilities to a person. Because you have no one else to depend on, you take it upon yourself to do the things you normally wouldn’t do. I for one am a typical guy, meaning I try not to ask for directions if I could help it. I let my companions do it for me.

Things change when I’m alone. Like the last time when I went to Dumaguete. It’s an entirely new place for me, so in just one night I asked about 2-3 people for directions going to places. It’s a personal record, because when I get lost in Manila, I’d pull over check my location on the map or on my phone, then figure out my next move.

How to Back Up Your Photos without a Computer

Posted by Cedric A. Solidon On October - 11 - 2010

Remember how I said in my last post about traveling light by using a smartphone and a bluetooth keyboard instead of a heavy ass laptop? I also mentioned in that post that I wish I could also back up my photos in the field without a computer. I thought it wasn’t possible yet, but apparently, it already is with some devices, including the very soon-to-be-launched Nokia N8.

So how do you back up your photos without using a computer? Check it after the jump, plus a video on how it works.

Traveling Light with a Nokia E63 and an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

Traveling Light

Traveling has always been a pain in the neck for me–literally. Imagine lugging around a camera, a couple of lenses, a tripod, clothes, and a laptop with you and you’ll see what I mean. During my trip to Dumaguete, I was able to borrow a 13-inch Vaio laptop, which according to the specs was around a “mere” 2 kilos–half a kilo lighter than my beater of a laptop. But surprise–the Vaio was heavy. I didn’t lug it around so much, but my back was already begging me to put my backpack down when I got to the airport.

So over the past few weeks, I looked for an alternative to lugging around a laptop with me. The most obvious choice was a netbook. But I wasn’t about to plunk down good money for something with limited features (most newer netbooks are equipped with Windows 7 Starter, which is crippled in many ways in terms of performance). I also looked into CULV (Consumer ultra-low voltage) laptops, but most were still around the 2-kilo range. The option I chose after the jump.

The Filipino-Mexican Connection

Posted by Cedric A. Solidon On October - 7 - 2010

You’ve probably heard it hundreds of times already about the Philippines’ connection to Mexico. Like it dates back from the time of the Galleon trade, that we got our maize, papaya, tobacco and all sorts of other stuff from the country on the other side of the Atlantic. But we share a lot more in common apparently. Just watch the video below to find out. :D
