Cafe by the Ruins – Breakfast Never Tasted This Good

Starting the day healthy with a cup of fresh fruits at Cafe by the Ruins.

Touch down Baguio. Just as soon I got off the bus, I immediately realized what it was that makes people return to this city over and over again. The parks and other popular landmarks may be old and worn (save maybe for the relatively new SM mall), but you’ll never really care once the chilly air touches your face. You’re without a doubt in Baguio already.

Because they say writers can’t think straight without coffee.

First stop: Cafe by the Ruins. It’s a small restaurant that used to be a part of the house of Phelps Whitemarsh, Benguet’s first civil governor, thus the name. It has a homely feel, so it’s easy to feel comfortable there once you’re inside. Just grab a seat and wait for the waiter to take your order.

Anyway, I was tired and hungry from the early morning trip so I was looking forward to a good and heavy breakfast. And Cafe by the Ruins didn’t disappoint.

The Menu

There are a number of great choices in their menu, so don’t be surprised if you find it difficult in choosing what breakfast to have.

Cafe by the Ruins’ Filipino “Lon-Si-Log”.

I ordered the Filipino “Lon-Si-Log” (short for longganisa, sinangag at itlog). The longganisa was a ‘longganisang hubad’, which was cubed and was a little sour. Not too sour though, else I wouldn’t have liked it. Along with that was a serving of sunny side up egg and garlic rice.

Farmer’s Morning Feast. A feast indeed.

Meanwhile, Trish had the Farmer’s Morning Feast. I wasn’t sure if they were referring to our local farmers because the meal consisted of home-cured bacon, an egg and rice–not your typical Pinoy farmer’s breakfast, but I digress. Nonetheless, the bacon was really good. You could really savor its flavor with every thick slice. And servings were large too, so we really had a great meal to start the day with.

Along with our breakfast were also two cups of fresh fruits. And man, did I feel healthy even if I chowed down longganisa and a portion of Trish’s bacon.

The meal cost around PhP500 for both of us. Not bad considering the servings were very generous and our orders already included a cup of fresh fruits and coffee.

Paintings Inside Cafe by the Ruins

As soon as you enter Cafe by the Ruins, you’ll immediately feel the crowd it aims to reach. There are a number of paintings hanging by the walls, and it’s also a venue for poetry readings, and other artsy events.

How to Get There

We did it the easy way. We hailed a cab, told the cabbie to take us to the Cafe by the Ruins and we got there in less than 10 minutes.
